all the things we should have done
With all moments of finality, I think as humans we often fall into thinking of all the things we didn't do, all the areas in which we fell short. Such as when someone dies, often times our thoughts are consumed with what we didn't do for that person, instead of thinking about all of things we did do. Being at a major cross road in life, and choosing one path, can often do the same thing. It all reminds me of a line from one of my favorite movies of all time, Lonesome Dove, when Captain Call was sitting in the room as his life long companion, Gus was dying in front him. Captain Call begins telling Gus about things he wished they had done and Gus grabs a bottle of whiskey off the table and says, " Woodrow, this ain't no time to start thinking about all the things we should have done.....Its been one hell of a ride my friend".
So today, I will try hard not to think about all the things I should have done. But, will focus on the reality that today I have to live as though its my last day, love all that I can, make a point to see all the beauty around me and give thanks, be kind to all, practice forgiveness with everyone and anything, make peace and most importantly, let everyone know I love them........Gus was right, its been one hell of a ride.

I'm tearfully speechless... Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteyou are one of a kind Mr Hughes.... :-)
ReplyDeleteI love this! I too loved Lonesome Dove and that quote is so touching....and so true.
ReplyDeleteYou are going to be great here in Belize! You have what it takes to weather the storms, and find the silver linings. Yes, even Paradise has clouds, but with clouds brings the rain to wash away all the disappointments and let you start again with a clean slate.
You're well on your way to making a new life and dreams come true. Love the posts! Keep em coming.
well said.....
ReplyDeleteYou help me focus on the here and now and the possibilities of tomorrow without fretting over the regrets of yesterday. Letting go of the little things is hard until you experience something even bigger that is life-changing and you realize that if your world ended today, would those little things have really mattered in the first place? Would you have exerted & wasted beautiful energy that you can never regain on things that don't add possitive attributes to your life or to the world? If you're ever at a crossroad and have to choose between two actions, always think about which would make the greatest impact on your heart or on the hearts of those you love. That is the energy that will continue long after we are gone. I want to be able to say, "It's been one HELL of a ride." Thank you once again for your inspiring thoughts Shannon. May you have many peaceful inspiring moments "Under the Shade" .
ReplyDeleteMr. Hughes, in case you haven't noticed, you're not quite dead yet, hence, the ride's not over. Think of yourself as taking the scenic route. For my two cents, life's not about what we should have done, it's about the stories we'll have to tell when our paths cross again. Until they do, find the fish and pencil my name on a pole and a spot on the floor for me.
